Working from home can be an ideal set-up especially for people who want to avoid long or heavy traffic commutes, or those who may want to try living in non-urbanized areas. The caveat though of a non-structured work environment is productivity. So how can one raise productivity in a work from home environment? How can work-from-home individuals and freelancers maintain their focus?

The publication Forbes.com has published an article comparing the productivity levels of a remote worker versus office workers. In that article, they cited a study that mentioned better productivity levels from home workers.

“Let’s look at the evidence. One of the most popularly cited studies is from 2014, in which the co-founders of Chinese travel website CTrip allowed some of their workers to work remotely on a regular basis, and compared their productivity to their office-bound counterparts. With all other factors being equal, the remote workers ended up making 13.5 percent more calls than their comparable office workers, which is the equivalent of almost a full extra day’s worth of work in a given week.”

Raising productivity levels

Media agency CNBC came up with an article aiming to help those working from home, be more productive and focused. In their write-up they mentioned that their tips will work for employees and freelancers who permanently work remotely, and employees who are temporarily on a work-from-home set-up due to weather, schedule, or personal circumstances.
“Sit smart -- When working at home, you may realize that you miss your chair at work. In order to find the perfect chair to work from at home, Holliday says professionals should look for five factors: a comfortable cushion, armrests, an adjustable backrest, lumbar support and wheels. Fortunately, you don't need to spend a fortune to find a chair that fits these specifications.”

Turn Off Notifications

UK-Based media publication Wired also mentioned several helpful tips that will increase the productivity levels of work from home individuals. One of the productivity solutions they shared is turning off notifications – both mobile and desktop.

“Push notifications for email, texts, social media notifications, the news, the weather, are detrimental to our productivity argues Dan Ariely, James B Duke professor of psychology and behavioural economics at Duke University, North Carolina. Recent studies show that 50 per cent of Americans keep their phone near them during every moment of their waking hours, and 50 percent of them check their phone at least several times an hour. A recent study he conducted found people were much more likely to make errors and not pay attention to their main task if they were interrupted by notifications from their phone - such as a text or a call.”
